How does it work?
Microneedling is a targeted, non-surgical approach to reducing acne scarring, fine lines, stretch marks, sagging skin, sun damage, and enlarged pores. It may even be used to reduce cellulite or cultivate hair growth in instances of undesirable thinning. Microneedling stimulates your body’s own natural repair processes to make healthy new collagen and elastin, which are the building blocks of skin. It can also “turn on” dormant hair follicles and make them productive again.
At Bella Lei, we use Skin Pen by Bellus Medical, the only FDA-approved microneedling machine.
The Morpheus8 is alternative form of microneedling at Bella Lie. The staff at Bella Lei will help you determine the best treatment route for your skin.
What is the procedure like?
Short needles are rolled across the area to be treated, making thousands of tiny pricks. The treatment lasts about 20 minutes. We use a numbing cream, so you feel minimum pain. After the procedure, we apply a refreshing hydration masque. For a few hours or days, you may have redness or itchiness, but you can resume normal activities immediately.
What are the results?
Your skin will look plumper, firmer and luminous immediately. It will also feel silky-smooth, and your moisturizer will absorb better. While these extreme results only last for a few weeks, microneedling definitely improves your skin’s texture over the long term. According to a 2008 NIH study, four microneedling sessions, spaced a month apart, resulted in an up to 400% increase in collagen and elastin — even six months after treatment!
It may take up to three months and multiple microneedling sessions to see new hair growth.
Most patients receive about four microneedling treatments a month apart, with a maintenance treatment every six months to a year.
Anything else I should know?
Microneedling is a great option for adults of any skin tone. In some cases, it is appropriate for pregnant women, to help reduce stretch marks. It is not for clients with a history of keloid scarring or who have been treated with Accutane or another isotretinoin in the past three months. It is also not for you if you have had radiation on the treatment area in the past year.
You should avoid the sun immediately after treatment and avoid makeup, swimming pools, and working out for 24-48 hours.
You should avoid all NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil) for 5 days prior to procedure to minimize any possibility of bruising. Eating pineapple, taking Bromelain or Arnica supplements is also helpful.
